When it comes to throwing a Halloween party like no other, we’ve got you covered with our party hints, tips and ideas – and our photo booth hire will ensure these memories are ones that you won’t forget!
Halloween has long been time-honoured Scottish tradition, as the holiday traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts divided their year into light seasons and dark seasons, and the festival marked the passing of light, and the beginning of the long, dark winter.
With darkness came beliefs and superstitions and at the time, folklore had it that ghosts of the dead walked among the living on this night. Villagers and townspeople would ward off any evil supernatural intentions by lighting great bonfires. Of course, nowadays we carry on these rituals by dressing up in scary outfits and hosting spooktacular Halloween parties!
Make sure your event is the event – not lacking in punch – and we’re not talking about alcohol! – so if you’re looking to liven up this year’s Halloween bash, here are some handy tips to get you started.
Set the Mood
There’s no better way to get into the spirit of devilishness and mischief than by rigging up your home or venue to look like a truly haunted house.
As far as the exterior goes, you can’t go wrong with some jack-o-lanterns. Pick out some relatively hollow pumpkins; you can tap them to check if you aren’t sure – in a range of sizes. Before carving commences, mark out the design you want in advance. The first step is getting inside to hollow the pumpkin out: if you simply slice the top off, the lid will just fall through so we would recommend a cutting at a 45-degree angle, to create a natural pumpkin plug.
Now, use the pre-made marking to carve out your creepy design. Once you’re finished, all that remains is scooping the insides with a big spoon and light the insides with a candle or glow stick for an extra spooky glow. Set up your pumpkin patch outside your venue, to greet your visitors in style.
Inside the house, it might be wise to focus your efforts on one or two rooms rather than spreading your decorations thin. A little lighting goes a long way, so turn off the lights wherever possible, and use lamps set at different heights for illumination to create some eerie shadows and effects. Some strategically positioned candles (placed well out of harm’s way) will add a nice flickering glow to proceedings, giving a great sense of atmosphere.
When it comes to decorations you can go the DIY route, there are definitely some great how-to-guides for cheap homemade props out there. On the other hand, there are always bargains to be found in supermarkets and pound shops – so get thrifty! Pick up a variety of bats, spiders and ghostly decorations for a lot less than you might think!
Remember: in the dark, a little goes a long way.
The music is an important part of creating the right ambience. If you’re looking to create a truly scary ambience, you could try some haunting gothic chanting, famously used in such bloodcurdling movies as The Exorcist and The Omen. Otherwise, horror movie soundtracks provide end to end thrills and some party track favourites.
Add a few Halloween themed bits of entertainment to really get your guests going. If you want to go down the classic route, then you can’t go wrong with apple bobbing! If you want something for a more mature audience, set up a Ouija board in the corner for some eerie thrills or even a tarot card reader to really please the crowds.
